What is PUWER?


PUWER applies to almost all work equipment used in the workplace, regardless of sector.

This includes machinery, power tools, workshop equipment, agricultural machinery, manufacturing plant, garage equipment and construction plant.

Under PUWER, equipment must be:
  • Suitable for its intended use

  • Maintained in a safe condition

  • Inspected where necessary to ensure ongoing safety

  • Used only by people who have received adequate information and training

  • Fitted with appropriate safety measures

Guidance is issued by the Health and Safety Executive, but legal responsibility remains with the employer or duty holder.
